Hotel JAL City Aomori is centrally located in Aomori City. This business-style hotel has nine floors and offers more than 160 rooms. It opened in 1997 and underwent renovations in 2011.

The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from JR Aomori Station and only 30 minutes by car from Aomori Airport. Popular attractions in the area include:

• Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse: Learn about Aomori’s iconic Nebuta Festival.
• Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center ASPAM: A great spot for souvenirs and local specialties.
• Sannai-Maruyama Site: Explore a fascinating archaeological site from Japan’s prehistoric era.
• Aomori Museum of Art: Home to contemporary artworks, including the famous “Aomori Dog” sculpture.
• Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru: A historical ship showcasing Japan’s ferry transport culture.

Exterior

The hotel is easy to spot thanks to JAL’s distinctive branding displayed on the building. In the first photo, you can see the triangular building in the distance along the same street—this is ASPAM, the Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center. Inside, visitors can find travel information, shop for souvenirs, and even enjoy views from the 13th-floor observation deck, which offers panoramic city, coastal, and night views of Aomori.

Our Stay: A Functional, Comfortable Room

We stayed in a Small Deluxe Double Room (Non-Smoking). At 17 square meters, the room wasn’t particularly spacious, but it was clean, well-maintained, and free from any unpleasant odors or dampness. The en-suite bathroom included both a separate shower and a bathtub.

The bed was soft yet supportive, providing a restful sleep after a long day of sightseeing. Our room also featured a window with a city view, offering a clear view of ASPAM.

Breakfast: A Must-Try Experience That Exceeded Expectations

Before our stay, we read many glowing reviews about the hotel’s breakfast (priced at ¥2,000), with guests raving about its quality and value. Some reviews mentioned:

“While the selection isn’t vast, every dish is beautifully prepared, and the seafood options like scallops and salmon are unforgettable. The hotel’s homemade jam is also delicious.”

“We stayed for two nights, and the breakfast menu was different each day—never boring, and I’d love to come back just for this!”

These comments piqued our curiosity, and we decided to add breakfast to our stay.

During our visit, due to lingering COVID-19 safety measures, the hotel had replaced the buffet with individually plated meals. Guests could choose between Japanese and Western-style breakfasts.

I chose the Japanese set meal, which featured a variety of beautifully plated dishes. Don’t be fooled by the modest portions—altogether, it was very filling! In addition to the set, there was a small selection of items and drinks available at a separate station.

The menu included names of each dish, although they were only in Japanese, which might be a challenge for international travelers. The highlight for me was the sashimi platter, with thick, fresh cuts of fish that tasted amazing.

Final Thoughts

Many reviewers also praised the attentive and courteous hotel staff, which I can confirm. If you’re planning a trip to Aomori and looking for a hotel in the city, Hotel JAL City Aomori is well worth considering.
